Almost done

Well, from one week to the next a lot can happen, last week was a bit hectic so we didn’t have time to work on the AS2C, this week is a different story.

Everything from the seat to the headlight is in place, the only thing we’re waiting on is the generator side cover, all the other parts are ready. The mufflers on the AS2C, and the other scramblers as well, are quite different from the ones on the usual models. They have built in spark arresters so you won’t cause forest fires when riding off road, not that the scramblers were that much better than the regular models when riding them in the forest…

Not without some bad luck

This week has been frustrating with a lot of things going wrong but at least we’re further along than we were last week if not by as much as we could have been. We’ve had to remove the engine on the bike no less than two times in the past week. When we were assembling the cylinders one of the piston rings broke, of course the broken piece fell into the crank case…

A few hours and a lot of shaking a heavy engine later the broken piece finally fell out of the engine, a big relief, so on the engine went again.

Next up was the engine side covers and the kick, unfortunately after two trial kicks it decided to disintegrate. Once again the engine had to come off complete with the extra headache of removing the entire clutch to repair everything. In the end it turns out it was caused by a loose clip.

But after that everything worked fine and we could get on with the build and make some progress 🙂

The side cover and oil tank are in place along with the clutch side engine cover complete with oil pump.

Change of plans

Well, we’ve had a bit of change of plans for this bike. We have decided not to use this bike to make the majority of the walkthroughs, since the scramblers are so rare and different in a number of ways to the regular models we’ve realized that it’s better to use a standard bike to make the walkthroughs instead of constantly referring to the differences between the models.

That means that we can work much quicker on it, since last update we’ve got pretty much most of the bike together 🙂

A thing to note is that we have the pre-1970 generator on it, it works just the same but during 1970 they changed it to make a number of improvements but both kinds are correct for the model!

We also managed to get a hold of a brand new front tire for the scrambler version, we had almost given up on getting one but at last we found one.

The new project/walkthrough

During the coming weeks and months this bike will become very familiar. We’ve just started with our walkthroughs, most of them will be based on this bike so while we restore it we’ll make sure to take pictures of every step along the way!

So far not much has been done but you can already see the rear suspension being put together in the walkthrough section and in a day or two you’ll see how the center stand and swing arm was put in place.
